Veterans organizations sponsored Operation Dire Distress in Washington, D.C., a 2-day educational forum and demonstration when the Iraq War started. Thousands of people marched from the Vietnam Memorial to the White House many carrying the U.S. flag turned upside down, the military symbol for "dire distress".
